Joshua Mohr – Author of Sirens

Joshua Mohr is the author of the novels “Termite Parade,” an Editors’ Choice on The New York Times Best Seller List, and “Some Things that Meant the World to Me,” one of O Magazine’s Top 10 reads of 2009 and a SF Chronicle best-seller. His most recent novel is “Damascus” about which the New York Times said, “The author’s jaunty voice [is] Beat-poet cool…Mohr nails the atmosphere of a San Francisco still breathing in the smoke that lingers from the days of Jim Jones and Dan White, a time when passionate ideologies and personal dysfunction intermingled and combusted.” Joshua teaches in the MFA program at the University of San Francisco and has published numerous short stories and essays in publications such as The New York Times Book Review, 7×7, the Bay Guardian, ZYZZYVA, The Rumpus, among many others. “Sirens” is his deeply personal memoir of addiction and parenthood. But this isn’t your typical addiction memoir, and Joshua isn’t your typical writer. As he dives deep into his past encounters—waking up covered in blood after a 2-day blackout, showing up to his first MFA class in a nearly incoherent state, crashing back into old habits after 13 months of sobriety—he beautifully juxtaposes the deep, anxiety-filled love he has for his toddler daughter, Ava, as he tries to stay clean. When he had three strokes in his early 30s, doctors discover he had an 8mm hole in his heart, which required him to “freelapse”– begin taking pain medications again under doctor supervision–in order to undergo surgery.

Melissa Hartwig – Author of Food Freedom Forever, The Whole30 Cookbook, The Whole30 and It Starts With Food

Most cookbooks are published just before the holidays for obvious reasons: we want to entertain with new recipes and we’re buying presents for our foodie friends. And publishers release most diet books after New Year’s Day as that’s when we have to address the weight we’ve gained with those new recipes (and old favorites) during the holiday season. THE WHOLE30 COOKBOOK offers a unique twist. It’s a brilliant cookbook for those who wish to change their lives, better their relationship with food, and improve their health (and lose weight!). With more than half a million copies sold, The Whole30 is not a passing fad — it’s proven to be a whole new way of thinking about food. Author Melissa Hartwig is the co-creator of the Whole30 program and the New York Times best-selling co-author of It Starts with Food and The Whole30. She has also recently releaased Food Freedom Forever.
