Dr. Mae C. Jemison – Astronaut and Ambassador for the Presidential Award-Winning Bayer Making Science Make Sense

Dr. Mae C. Jemison is a former astronaut! She is a physician, entrepreneur, chemical engineer, philanthropist, and science literacy advocate. She is with us to talk about her role as the Ambassador for the Presidential award-winning Bayer Making Science Make Sense ® program.  The Making Sense program is Bayer’s company-wide initiative toadvance science literacy across the United States. They achieve this through employee volunteerism, hands-on science learning, and public education.  Dr. Jemison is on a mission to increase awareness about science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).  She launched into space on September 12, 1992 on the Space Shuttle Endeavor, becoming the first woman of color in the world to travel into space. She stands firm on the premise that students, particularly girls and minorities, the two most underrepresented groups in STEM education, must be encouraged to pursue a STEM education and ultimately, a STEM career.  She is a trained dancer, practiced medicine in Los Angeles, served as the Area Peace Corps Medical Officer for Sierra Leone and Liberia, and leads 100 Year Starship®, an initiative to ensure human travel to another star within the next 100 years. Today, four groups of college students are at the Space Center Houston to attempt to set a Guinness World Record in the The Bayer-Big Ten Alka-Rocket Challenge for the highest launch of an Alka-Rocket.
