Samme Chittum – Author of The Flight 981 Disaster: Tragedy, Treachery, and the Pursuit of Truth (Air Disasters)

Samme Chittum is an author, narrative journalist and Pulitzer Traveling Fellowship recipient. Her work explores the intersection of current events and history and has been published by the New York Times, the New York Post, the New York Daily News, and the Village Voice. In 1972, a powerful explosion rocked American Airlines Flight 96 and ripped a gaping hole in the bottom of the aircraft. Miraculously, despite the damage, the pilots were able to land the plane safely. Less than two years later, another plane suffered the exact same damage, but crashed, killing 346 people. Samme writes about the cover-up after the first crash and how the second crash should have been prevented.
