Christopher Marquis is the Samuel C. Johnson Professor in Sustainable Global Enterprise at Cornell University and is a leading expert on how businesses can achieve the elusive triple bottom line of environmental, social and financial performance. His latest book, Better Business: How the B Corp Movement is Remaking Capitalism will be published in the fall of 2020 by Yale. Prior to joining Cornell, he taught at Harvard Business School for 10 years, where he developed an award-winning course on Social Entrepreneurship. Chris has authored over 20 peer-reviewed academic articles and over 50 Harvard business cases on topics related to sustainable business. This research has earned awards for scholarly achievement from the Academy of Management and the American Sociological Association. Chris received a Ph.D. in sociology and business administration from the University of Michigan and a BA in History from Notre Dame. Before his academic career, he worked for six years in the financial services industry, most recently as vice president and technology manager for a business unit of J.P. Morgan Chase.

He is also directing the worldwide effort at IBM Research focused on developing technologies, platforms, and partnerships for climate change mitigation and adaptation; under his leadership, researchers from the IBM’s global labs are innovating in areas such as accelerated material discovery, AI-driven climate modelling, carbon footprint optimization, and decision support for business and societal resiliency towards extreme climate events.
