Susan B. Inches – Author of Advocating for the Environment: How to Gather Your Power and Take Action
People love their place… they’re going to do anything to protect it.

Sue Inches
Susan B. Inches, author of Advocating for the Environment: How to Gather Your Power and Take Action, since childhood, has envisioned a world that is compassionate, inclusive and environmentally aware. This vision guided her throughout her schooling and a 25-year career in public policy. As Deputy Director of the Maine State Planning Office she managed a portfolio of environmental policy issues on behalf of the Governor. Prior to this Sue worked with the fishing industries as a Director at the Maine Department of Marine Resources. Signature policy issues she’s worked on include fisheries, land use planning, smart growth, building and energy codes, renewable energy, energy efficiency, working waterfront access, community finance, and rural broadband. In 2018, Sue developed a unique college course on environmental advocacy, which she now teaches at Colby and Bates colleges. Few schools offer courses in advocacy skills, and students are eager to learn them. Demand for her course led her to write this book. Sue now works as a speaker, educator, and advocate with a focus on the environment and climate change. She helps people find their power, and provides them with the tools and guidance to address current environmental issues. Sue is currently working as a board member of Defend Our Health, and on the steering committee member of the Pine Tree Coalition, which seeks to establish the citizen rights to clean air, clean water and a healthy environment in the Maine Constitution. She also serves on the policy committee of Our Power, a coalition seeking to establish a consumer owned utility in Maine. She holds a BA in Human Ecology from College of the Atlantic, and MBA from the University of New Hampshire.
