Silence: In the Age of Noise by Erling Kagge. Life is noisy. Norwegian explorer Kagge spent 50 days skiing solo to the South Pole, accompanied only by a radio from which he had removed the batteries. (Oh, he has also climbed Mount Everest, walked to the North Pole and slogged through the New York City sewer system.) SILENCE recounts his own experience and discusses the observations of poets, artists, and explorers about how essential silence is to our sanity and happiness, our senses of wonder and gratitude.
